Patagonia’s Berlin store regularly hosts community events centered around sustainability, environmental activism, and outdoor activities. These events offer a platform for sharing inspiring stories and engaging with grassroots initiatives.
In February 2023, Patagonia Berlin featured two impactful community-based projects under the theme "Protecting nature through empowerment of local communities in the Amazon Rainforest": Uakari Lodge from the Brazilian Rainforest and Wiñak from the Equatorial Rainforest. Both initiatives emphasize sustainable practices that not only benefit the environment but also rely on the active participation of local communities for their success.
Priscila presented the Uakari Lodge project, sharing its fascinating journey from a mission to protect the endangered Uakari monkey to becoming one of Brazil's first community-based ecotourism initiatives in the Amazon. Inspired by a passionate biologist, a protected reserve was created, and 20 years later, it has evolved into a model for sustainable tourism and conservation. Though Ka'a Harmony didn’t exist at the time, Priscila was already deeply involved in her activism, spreading awareness about the rainforest and its projects. Uakari Lodge holds special meaning to her, as it was the starting point of her journey.
Located 600 km from Manaus, Uakari Lodge combines scientific research and sustainable tourism, with local communities playing a leading role. Not only do they share their stories and deep knowledge of the forest, but they also manage this successful initiative, demonstrating the power of community-driven conservation.
At the Patagonia event, the audience was also introduced to the historical context of the Amazon, including the negative impact of colonization and deforestation during Brazil's dictatorship years. However, the message of the event remained positive: when conservation efforts are combined with community empowerment, both the forest and its people thrive!
